NY Post: Brit kicks off Circus with lots of costumes, remixes...

Blog.NYPost.com: After four years of shacking up, breaking down, hiding out and a butterfly-like reemergence, Britney Spears took the stage for her first arena tour since 2004 in New Orleans last night and the fans ate it up. Descending from the ceiling dressed as the lovechild of a ringmaster and that evil guy from "Temple of Doom," Britney kicked things off by singing "Circus."

Although it needs to be said -- there is no live singing. It's all lip-sync, but I can't imagine one single fan bought a ticket hoping for a sweet and stylized acoustic concert. No -- they want lavish productions, insane choreography and spectacle, spectacle, spectacle! Well, that's exactly what they were given.

Remixing many of her hits -- "Me Against The Music" became a Bollywood routine, "Gimme More" went from the strip club to the dojo as Brit was joined by an army of dancing ninjas -- the showwoman may have never hit her choreography like she used to back in the day according to some, but it's still fantastic to see her remember her moves.

As for the intricate costumes, some were amazing -- like the Bollywood ensemble -- while others looked cheaper than the hair extensions she wore back in 2007. Seriously, are those pasties? Can we have a word with whatever half-blind prostitute designed that get up?

But her grand entrance wasn't the only time she took a plunge -- Britney fell from the heavens more times than Satan, chalking up at least four free falls. My favorite easily has to be coming down on a chair made of leather-clad men. Elton John is pissed he didn't think of that one first.

All in all, it seemed like the kick off of Britney's 40-plus date "Circus" tour was a resounding success -- and an excellent portend of what's to come once those first-night jitters are gone and she can relax and dig into the dance steps.

But if you think reading about a concert is a bit like dancing about architecture, check out some not-so-great quality videos from a fans perspective before they get ripped down.

Rolling Stone: Britney's sexy Circus

RollingStone.com: Britney Spears put another notch in her comeback belt by powering through the nearly two-hour opening date of her Circus Starring Britney Spears tour last night (March 3rd) in New Orleans. The show, in her home state of Louisiana, marked the pop star’s long-awaited return to the stage: she ditched her Onyx Hotel Tour (which supported 2003’s In the Zone) in June 2004 after suffering a knee injury on the set of “Outrageous” video and only took the stage a handful of times since, most notably in 2007, when she performed a few poorly received nightclub gigs billed as the M+Ms.

As MTV News reports, surrounded by a giant Big Top spectacle and acrobats and backup dancers aplenty, Spears danced her way through the almost exclusively upbeat set list, which kicked off with a video greeting starring Perez Hilton. Each of the show’s four acts (Circus, House of Fun - Anything Goes, Freakshow/Peepshow, Electo Circ) featured a plethora of outfit changes that ranged from revealing to very revealing - she donned a naughty policewoman’s outfit for closers “Womanizer” and “Circus,” a Madonna-esque swirl bra for “Radar” and an Indian-inspired look for her Bollywood remix of “Me Against the Music” (which unfortunately didn’t feature a cameo by the Material Mom - though the tour has only just begun). Though some reports indicate Spears did some live singing, the L.A. Times‘ Ann Powers notes that the show was dominated by backing tracks.

Spears only let the tempo drop for ballad “Everytime,” which she sang while sitting in the nook of a giant umbrella suspended from the ceiling. The emotional track from In the Zone was not on the set list Spears released two days ago, when she gave fans a sneak peek at Circus rehearsals. As promised, though, she only dipped into her early catalog for a remix of “… Baby One More Time,” the breakout song from her 1999 debut.

Perhaps Spears, who’s made it through her share of troubling times the past few years, isn’t so eager to look back at the past. The new Britney is content to play pretend in perhaps the ultimate kids’ playground for a few hours - and give fans a bit of high-flying escapism to lose themselves in, too.

Guess who's in the tour book?

Meee! Oh my, seriously...

I sent in 2 pictures. One on which I'm alone and on the other one, I'm with my cousin Vanessa in front of the Big Apple Circus in NYC with our VIP tickets in hands for Britney's performance on Good Morning America. My Mom took this pic and I just love it. Our stay in NYC for the release of Circus was just amazing.

Well, both pictures were chosen! Hey, I'm in The Circus Starring Britney Spears tour book! It's cool considering thousands sent pictures and only about 40 were selected. I still can't believe it... So, Britney probably saw my pictures and all thattt! Thousands of people will see my pictures... I'm freaking out! Can you spot me?

Note that whenever BritneyAlbum.com is back, all the tour book scans and other tour pictures will be added to the gallery.

Asociated Press: Spears returns in first concert tour in 5 years

The Associated Press: NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Dressed as a sexy ringmaster and directing a colorful cast that included jugglers, acrobats and martial arts dancers, Britney Spears delivered a tightly choreographed, if perfunctory performance Tuesday night as she kicked off her first concert tour in five years.

The 27-year-old pop superstar's "Circus" tour kicked off in her home state of Louisiana at the New Orleans Arena before a nearly sold-out crowd that cheered on their idol as she gyrated and slithered across the stage while singing some of her biggest hits, from the recent "Womanizer" to her first and now classic song, "Baby One More Time."

The wild applause has been largely absent from Spears' life since the last time she went on tour in 2004, as the singer endured a devastating downward spiral: Due largely to personal troubles, she went from one of pop music's most profitable, in-demand entertainers to an out-of-control tabloid persona who seemed to be on a path to destruction.

But over the last year, that path has been reversed, as she's embarked on a successful comeback that has seen her image, as well as her career, rehabilitated.

The "Circus" tour was another strong step in the right direction. Spears didn't interact much with the crowd - the only thing she uttered to the audience was "Thank you, New Orleans" at the end of the nearly two-hour show - and appeared at times to be lip-synching. But fans didn't seem to care, screaming wildly at the first sight of Spears, who descended from the ceiling on hoops suspended by wires, wearing a short red and black ringmaster ensemble.

Spears started the show with the title track to her new CD, "Circus," then went right into "Piece of Me," which she performed largely from a cage, part of the elaborate, grandiose stage backdrops.

Acrobats twirled from suspended fabric as Spears sang and danced, showing off her toned body with flirty, seductive moves. She got frisky with two male dancers as she performed "Touch of My Hand" while sporting a blindfold... Read more...

E!: Britney's Circus takes off in New Orleans

EOnline.com: Britney Spears is back and, the good news is, she's stronger than yesterday.

The Circus Starring Britney Spears kicked off tonight at New Orleans Arena, where her adoring hometown fans - and members of the media - lined up for hours beforehand to get their hands on tour memorabilia and otherwise prove their loyalty to the fiercely comebacking pop star.

And the 27-year-old songstress didn't seem to disappoint, as evidenced by the concertgoers who Twittered away every moment of the show.

In addition to all the bells and whistles promised by her manager, magician, stylist, makeup artist, random folks, etc., Spears' desire to do good and make up for lost time was palpable, and that alone would have made for a thrilling experience.

Opening act the Pussycat Dolls got things rolling, whetting the audience's appetite for the sexy spectacle that was to follow.

A little more than an hour later, Spears descended from the ceiling and dove into "Piece of Me," off of 2007's Blackout.

The night's 16-song set list included "Radar," "Boys," a "Gimme More" remix, "Everytime," "Me Against the Music" backed by Bollywood-inspired dancers, "Do Somethin'," the more than suggestive "Touch of My Hand" and the pleasantly controversial "If U Seek Amy," made all the more carnivalesque when Britney wielded a big pink hammer and gave her dancers the whack-a-mole treatment.

And, as promised, earlier in the evening Britney was cut in half. (Though the question remains: Is she whole again?)

The greatest hits came toward the end, when Brit and her dancers polished of "Slave 4 U," "Toxic" and "...Baby One More Time" to close the show.

Womanizer" was tonight's encore selection. Amid a shower of sparks, Britney then thanked the audience and wished them a good night.

LA Times: Acrobats, magicians and a bit of erotica

LATimesBlog.com: The pop star pulls out all the bells, whistles and clowns in a sparkly New Orleans show that dazzles fans and sets her up for a big comeback.

Reporting from New Orleans -- Her singing was dominated by a backing track. Her moves were nothing special -- defined by much strutting and stripper-like shimmying, with the minimum amount of acrobatics to prove her mettle as a dance-pop queen. Her physical form, still beautiful, didn't take one's breath away the way it did when she was 17.

But on Tuesday's opening night of her "Circus" tour at the New Orleans Arena, Britney Spears, the mighty Aphrodite with the troublesome tawdry streak, nonetheless renewed her claim as one of the world's most adept manipulators of the public interest. Powering through a 90-minute show that integrated her impetuous teen hits with the more perverse material from the albums she released after a very public breakdown that made her a constant in the tabloids, the Louisiana native flashed her famous good ol' girl smile at the fans, mostly female, who still find her a worthy patron saint of the erotic arts.

The intensely bespangled show -- which sticks closely to the big-top theme that also defines her latest album -- featured a huge array of tricks and extra players, including jugglers, clowns, magicians, martial artists, acrobats and rings of fire. Somewhere in there was Spears herself, looking hearteningly happy as she took on the role of ring mistress, clearly relishing the chance to prove herself healthy and in control... Read more...
